Beyond the neon: How to have a great time in Las Vegas (even if you don't drink or gamble)

Before coming to the city of Las Vegas, I really only knew it from the movie The Hangover and What Happens in Vegas. My impression: a place to get drunk, gamble, see lots of neon signs and perhaps accidentally get married (how could we forget that episode on F.RI.E.N.D.S with Ross & Rachel).

As someone who doesn't drink, gamble or smoke, I really thought I was going to not enjoy it (given this city was ultimately known for all of the above). To my surprise, this place has been anything but, and I've truly been able to realise the sheer natural beauty available here, as well as what the rest that this spangled-star-studded nation has to offer. Here is my 3 days in Las Vegas.

Neon, neon and more neon

The 'burbs - Stay on the outskirts of the main city

Outside of 'The Strip' (i.e. the place with all the neon lights and Caesars Palace) the suburbs are actually normal suburbs with kids and families and schools. Because Vegas is located in the desert, there is a whoooole lot of space - it's actually quite a nice break from the congested Los Angeles traffic. Our AirBnb was located at the south of the Strip, being a whooole lot cheaper than it was in LA. Conveniently, it was located near a super close supermarket, so we made use of their fruit shop!

Explore the Strip and the Fermont Experience

Whilst this place is known for that infamous slogan, it was still fun to walk around the Strip and see all the bright lights. Didn't stay out into the night too long (ended up at home at the airbnb making soup - no joke haha), but did really enjoy seeing the characters of Las Vegas. I did have more photos... but it looks like my phone has deleted them somehow!! Cries. Anyway, enjoy these photos.

Back to the Future?

Tempting

In absolute love with this colour scheme

Wonder where Zach Galifianakis is ...

Explore the arts & culture of the town

Las Vegas has quite a quirky art scene, especially at Downtown Las Vegas. Have a look around at the street art and even get a chance to learn some on the mobster history around that part of town a couple of decades ago ...

Colourful characters

Makin' my way downtown ... walking fast, strangers pass and I'm homebound ...

Never have I seen a parking lot look so epic

Did I pose for this? Of course I did

If you're here on the weekend, check out the local Farmers Markets!

Nothing like getting to know a city and its' locals  like checking out the local produce. We went to the Downtown Summerlin Farmers Markets, which is about half an hour out of town and opens on Saturdays at 9am. They've got everything from fruits, veggies, donuts, honey and even little homemade knick-knacks if you wanted gifts for friends back home. Support small businesses and get some wholesome cute vibes from this place - adorable doggo included.

Nothing makes my heart sing like handwritten signs and free samples
Honeycomb? My organic obessed dad would literally cry if he came here

Hummus! All flavours! Hummus!

Pickle flavoured popcorn - yes it was as good as you thought it would be and more!

Delicious tacos - oh how I miss you so

Appreciate natural beauty at the Grand Canyon & Horseshoe Bend

Even further outside of Boulder City is this increaseible UNESCO Heritage Listed places, where the word breathtaking is quite honestly an understatementNow this may be a controversial suggestion as technically the Grand Canyon is not located in Nevada (it's actually located in Arizona) BUT it is the city that is suggested for your trip to the Canyon if you're from outside. No words for this place -- quite honestly would describe it as one of the greatest things my eyes have ever seen.

Just. Wow.

Having a laugh

Antelope Canyon - this place was absolutely beautiful

Horseshoe Bend in all it's glory

Come with a jacket - even though it's hot in the day, it's FREEZING at night!

Sure, the strip clubs and gambling are part of the Las Vegas personality, but there is so much more to see in this interesting city.

For a vast desert town, it's got a whole lot of character. Check it out!
